News: Harpenden Lions Club Charity Musical Evening [2009]
Harpenden Lions Club held another of its series of popular charity music events, ‘Music for the Month of May’ last Saturday (16th May) in Rothamsted Manor, Harpenden. The audience of 100, which filled the attractive Great Drawing Room, was entertained by students from the locally-based Purcell School which is one of the country’s leading specialist music schools.
Mike Kelly, organiser of the Lions event, said afterwards, “I was astonished to hear such amazing music from these talented young children aged between
12 and 16. The audience just loved it and the enthusiastic applause proved the popularity.
Over £1300 was raised from tickets sales and the generous sponsorship of HSBC and Harpenden Musicale. Three charities will benefit from the money raised. The Towersey Foundation works with Pasque Hospice to provide music therapy in palliative care. CLIC Sargent provides support for children with cancer; CLIC assists and cares for the children and their families in diverse ways. Purcell School, with an international reputation for excellence in musical development, is dependent upon public support to meet the cost of providing scholarships for its young musicians. The Lions Club donation will help fund future talented children.
The seven students from Purcell who entertained the audience displayed great talent and tremendous versatility. The varied programme included pieces for piano, oboe, French horn and piano as well as voice. “This was the first time we have partnered with Purcell for these concerts. We intend to ask them back next year – by popular demand!” concluded Lions Mike Kelly.
