Event: Hertfordshire County Show [23rd May 2009]
The 123rd Annual Herts County Show. The Hertfordshire County Show is the highlight of the County’s outside event calendar, and 2009 will be no exception. Every year the Hertfordshire County Show gets bigger and better, and with the superb balanced combination of traditional displays and demonstrations, combined with some new exciting 2009 additions, it offers a fun-filled day out for all the family.
New additions to this year’s programme include: The Hertfordshire Land Army Girls and Timber Corps tribute display in the Grand Ring on both days. The theme is ‘From our wonderful Land Army Girls to modern Satellite Robots’, and the interactive display will demonstrate the changes in farming techniques and machinery since the 1940’s. Following the tribute display on Saturday, a celebratory afternoon tea for 65 original Hertfordshire Land Army Girls and their guests, hosted by Caroline Tapster, the Show President, will be held in the Members Marquee.
Also new this year is the Hertfordshire County Council information Marquee, BBC TV’s Gus Dermody Sheepdog Display, the Casablanca Steps 1940’s musical quartet, the Hertfordshire Helicopter Air Ambulance will be on view, plus two new covered Picnic Marquees for visitors wishing to bring their own Picnic Lunch. This year’s popular Grand Ring attractions are Europe’s number one stunt and trick riding team the Devil’s Horsemen on Saturday, and the spectacular Bolddog Lings freestyle motorcycle display team on Sunday.
This year’s main Show education event is the Hertfordshire Primary Schools competition to create a ‘green’ farm in a shoebox – using only recycled materials. The innovative competition is open to three categories: Age 3 to 6 years, Age 7 to 9 years, and Age 9 to 11 years. The three winning entries will each receive a £100 cash prize for educational resources, and a school class ticket to Willows Farm Village in London Colney. All the finalists and winning entries will be on display in the Hertfordshire County Council Marquee at the Show.
